English, Language & Literacy Blog: 'Home and Away' by John Marsden

This leads me to the idea that the home-away-home structure can function as narrative fulfilment of the desire to be with a departed loved one once again. Harry Potter — the first four books start and end in a dangerous home and allow Harry adventures in what seems to be a more secure place in between. Holes — A stay at a dangerous juvenile detention centre gives Stanley Yelnats a completely new understanding of himself and the home and family he finally returns to. Hatchet — Brian learns to survive the breakup of his parents marriage and his feeling of being isolated after he leaves home in a plane that crashes in the bush and leaves him literally isolated. Having experienced physically what he at first felt emotionally, he returns home with knowledge of his inner strength.

With little detail, the family is introduced in the first four pages, then the fifth page, April 27, with the deep red colour of blood reflected through the aquarium, war begins. Over the next four pages, the war is described, again sparely, but the childlike illustrations mirror the horror of what is happening. By August 29, rations are being handed out to the homeless, and on September 16, the stark realistic illustration shows the scared and undernourished family sitting by a candle, talking about what to do. All around is black, the features of the family stand out in bleak contrast.

The Prime Minister says that if they let us out into the community it ll just encourage other illegal immigrants. The Deputy Prime Minister says we re not genuine refugees. The Minister for Immigration says we should have gone through the proper procedures and applied to come here the prescribed way. Apparently there was a queue or a waiting list or something, and we were meant to find an Immigration Office and put our names down to be considered. I feel terrible about the trouble we've caused them. John Marsden is one of the most popular writers of young adult fiction.

His first book, So Much to Tell You, was published in 1987 and because of its enormous popularity is also available now in a play version. The gripping war series which began with Tomorrow, When the War Began has broken all sales records for young adult fiction, and Burning for Revenge won the Bookdata ABA Book of the Year in 1996. This story starts in an uneasy-dangerous place and ends in a slightly less uneasy one. A young creatureanimalobject with human characteristics enjoys the security of a comfortable home until something happens to make it unhappy. This is an excellent text to use in a grade 5/6 classroom; both my brother and my sister were read this book when they were at this level in primary school. Some children though may have even come from a situation such as the one in the book so they will be able to better connect with the story. If this is the case they can if comfortable help other students in their understanding of the themes behind the text. As in real life there is no happy ending in this book.

This is a heart-warming story of love, sacrifice, family, and faith. It’s a good story with multiple messages and the struggles and love of a wartime family – a good story that was written well. This historical fiction novel is a nostalgic and tender story about the power of love, the reality of war, and the hope we all have that things will turn out all right. Home and Away is a powerful, heartbreaking and thought-provoking story written and read by author John Marsden with illustrations by Matt Ottley.

From The Mixed-up Files of Basil E. Frankweiler — A brother and sister seek adventure by running away from home to the safe pleasures of the Metropolitan Museum and then return home again. A River Dream by Allen SayMoonhorse by Mary Pope Osborne, illustrated by S.M. So my actual rating for this is 3.5 stars. It took a little while for me to get into it, but it improved and I turned out liking it. (Part of the probably was probably the lack of sleep, so the book doesn't need to take the entirety of the blame for starting slow, lol). I received a copy of this book to review.

This again allows the reader to have a different perspective on refugees, and see what their point of view might be when they are put into detention centers. I thought a lot about my Granddad as I read this story. He served in WWII and had younger siblings at home.

Some of Dennis' decisions were obnoxious. I'm glad there was some repair to relationships and some touching on deeper subjects but no real delving deep. The story is quite graphic in its descriptions of the harsh realities of war on the front. Glen has to deal with the boredom, inclement weather, and the lack of food, and he is resigned to the fact that he will never see his family again. His one solace is the scent of lavender, which reminds him of his mother and home. With Christmas Day looming, there is no sign of respite for Glen and his battalion.

After almost failing high school in Sydney, Matt Ottley lived the itinerant life of a stockman for some years on cattle stations in Queensland, before returning to Sydney to study fine arts and music. Snow White — starts in a dangerous home, ends up in another castle, married to a handsome prince, this time happy. Pride and Prejudice is similar in that Lizzie Bennett’s financial situation makes her life precarious unless she gets married. She ends up in the slightly more modern version of a castle.

My wife read it to our family including my 13 year old son and 17 year old daughter. This was a good story - I would have preferred it if it was longer. It was a good taste of how much war sucks and how awesome those who serve really are. Dennis is a fifteen year old who works and goes to school.

My Brother

My grandpa served in Army in WWII and every time I read books set in this time period, it really brings to life my memories of him and I miss him. This is a book that begins on Thanksgiving 1944. It’s about a family with a 16-year old son struggling to help his parents cope with their oldest son’s being first in Holland and with their strained relationship in a tough time. Along the way, he has his first romance and gets unexpected help from an unlikely source. Meanwhile, the older son finds himself in the cauldron of one of the biggest battles in history, and the sentiments of Christmastime contrast sharply with the horrors of war.
